Somalia: Somali President, Prime Minister Disagree Over Cabinet Reshuffle

imageSomali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed on Sunday (October 27th) publically disagreed over Ahmed’s decision to reshuffle the cabinet.

On Saturday, Ahmed reshuffled several cabinet members, among them Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir Mohamed who was moved to the Ministry of Livestock and Animal Husbandry.

Mohamud objected to the move, criticising Ahmed for “making outrageous decisions” without his consultation and declaring the reshuffle “null and void”, AFP reported.

“It is unfortunate that the prime minister kept making outrageous decisions against the governance processes and the governing institutions in a time when the country is in crisis,” the president said in a statement.

Mohamud said that “every minister should continue fulfilling their duties regardless”.

Mohamed, who is said to be a close ally of the president, continued his normal duties on Sunday by meeting with Turkish Ambassador to Somalia Olgan Bekar, according to Somalia’s Jowhar.

Somali Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Osman Jawari said he was concerned over the spat but is confident Somalia will be able to resolve the disagreement through legal channels, RBC Radio reported.

“I hope that at this stage there will be no need to transport our differences to foreign capitals,” he said.

In a statement on Monday, Jawari said the legislature is “firmly committed deliver the common legislative agenda agreed between the parliament and the Council of Ministers.”
