The Prime Minister

During the parliamentary preceding few days, two major election related activities were undertaken in Ethiopia. On Tuesday 12th of April 2010, the Ethiopian Government and European Union signed a Memorandum of Understanding concerning observation of the May 2010 national election. On the following day, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi presented his nine month report on the state of the country’s economy to the parliament. Though the report was said to be reflective of nine months economic performance, there was no illusion on the part of the opposition parliamentarians that it would largely aim at the forthcoming national election. As precisely predicted, by barraging us with a volley of rosy statistical indices well ahead of time, the report did aim at undercutting the significance of the forthcoming election debate on economic issues.
