VOA News – Ethiopian Troops Enter Somali Town

Hundreds of heavily armed Ethiopian troops entered the town of Beledweyn, in the border region of Hiiraan. Residents said they saw dozens of armored vehicles rolling into the center of the town as people left Friday prayers.“The Ethiopians arrived with no resistance,” said town elder Mohamud Ahmed Hoshow. “I don’t know why they are here, but I can tell you that the opposition militia left the town.”Fierce firefight broke out between Ethiopian troops and Islamist rebels who entered the town a day earlier, according to VOA’s stringer in Beledweyn. But the Islamist militia, who are loyal to Hizbul-Islam, immediately vacated their positions in the town.At least one person died and several others were injured in a camp for internally displaced people after a mortar shell slammed the camp, according to VOA’s stringer.Over the last few days, Hiiraan has been the center of an intense fighting between Somali government forces and Islamist militia. On Thursday, the Islamist group Al-Shabaab repelled a government attack on the nearby town of Bulo Burde. At least 21 people were killed in that fighting.
